Now is not the time

The Sun

fighting the chill

reaches down with its infinite arms

permeates my skin

and courses through my veins

intoxicating me.

My eyelids droop in response

as I feel

the cold retreating

the sounds receding

and all thoughts dwindling to a blackness

until

a rising tide of guilt

washes over me

and jolts me back to the shore.

I open my eyes, and get up.

‘Cause now is not the time

to slacken the grip

to go easy

to be pleased with myself.

Now is the time

to shake off this false weariness

this treacherous satisfaction

and keep walking.

For the world is

full of people

who think

they have done enough.

And someone up above

smiles sadly

for they had only just begun.

  1. What beautiful profound powerful truths you so delicately weaved – making me aware of the oceanic nature of my being, and how often I mistake myself to be this wave and that. The miraculous warmth of the true magic always seems only to be the beginning of how much there is to be revealed.

  2. This is actually the sad truth of life…those who have a real zest for life leave too soon while those just surviving seem to live a long, unproductive and are even ungrateful for the gift of life given to them. Beautiful words as always Sundaram 👌👌💟💟

  3. Oh Sundaram, you speak for all of humanity in this one..so easily to be lulled into not doing anything more..just sleep away into the sun’s rays, the warmth that lulls you to the living oblivion, even if it is just for a little while..If you know what you really should be doing..yes shake yourself back and do it and if you are still not sure..you can ask..that one who smile upstairs// that someone will let you know the better plan, inshallah.

    • Beautiful description Karima…🍀☺🍀… it’s sometimes an effort to do the simplest of things. All we can do, at such times, is keep awake. The rest as you mentioned will dawn from above, from the already laid up plan for us. I’m trying to just be there to receive the directions. And moving along…🙏🎼🌸🙏

  4. Inspirational and so true! The first sign of comfort after a bit of hardship can make many lull, and take it easy, and leave the track just as things are heating up. If we go another few paces instead, it’s the joy of achievement which carries us along. If we stop, we just stop!

Having said that, I love my siesta in the winter sun afternoon, whenever that is possible (was frequent as a child, not too many opportunities nowadays, but I grab any that comes along) 😀

  5. “The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep”
Your poem reminded me of Robert Frost; the only poet I can quote since I was a teenager. Those lines are from my absolute favorite poem titled Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening…
I absolutely love the last line of your poem. It rings so true! We have all been there from time to time. Ready to drop out when the going gets too tough to comprehend. The wise and gritty amongst us hear the divine voice within us and realise that its a bend in the map of our Life. A halt to take a deep breath and keep walking. The rest fall away…deaf to their divinity and blind to its miracles and possibilities.
Your poem also reminds me of a poem I wrote. Its long. But its quite similar to your theme. Do check it out if I have the time. https://peepintomymemorypalace.wordpress.com/2019/01/20/case-of-the-lost-soulprint/
Lastly your poem also reminds me of a Kishore Kumar song…Ruk Jaana Nahin Tu Kahin Haar Ke…O Rahi, O Rahi….remember? Thats the link for the song incase you need a refresher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO7OKASr8lc
Did I mention I love your poem? I do. I got kinda lost in memories…but thats who I am!

  6. Beautiful and full of inspiration. Actually we never realize our true worth and with time we lose our ambition and desire to go further. But as you said in the poem we must go on and fight and strive for what can make us and this world a better place. Loved this one.

  7. Once again I must say you write beautifully. The line breaks are at the perfect time for my brain to stop and think about what has come before and what might be coming next. It’s almost like if you started at any line in the poem and stopped at any other you could be reading an almost infinite number of different pieces.

Just. Keep. Starting. A very important message that I am thankful of the reminder to keep doing. 🙏😊
